Basalt Cubes
The main advantage of setts over a monolithic surface is repairability. When a service trench has to be dug, the paving is lifted and relaid with the same stones — whereas a patch in concrete or asphalt shows forever.
Basalt setts carry the characteristic vesicular pores of volcanic rock, which gives the surface a natural texture — additional grip in wet weather, particularly on slopes.
They are laid in fan, linear or random bond. Fan bond distributes load evenly, which is exactly why it has been used for centuries wherever vehicles pass.
